When you tell someone they need to get organized, sometimes that can be interpreted that they are a slob or messy. You may also get the response that they are organized “in their own way”. They know where everything is and please don’t touch their stuff. If we reframe the word organize, with the word simplify, I believe this sounds less like work and more like a breath of fresh air. Like the easy button...everyone wants things simple!
One of the first questions I ask a client is why they want to simplify. There is always a motivating factor and is key to having a successful session together. When I know what the end goal is, it allows me to share benefits that relate to their purpose. These benefits can also be used to keep them motivated through the process. For example, if the client hires me to help clear out a guest room because they are having a baby, I am able to use this information to keep them on task, as well as get them prepared for the changes that a new baby brings to their home and life schedule.
